Confronting parachute science in conservation

چکیده
Parachute, or colonial, science is increasingly becoming a hot topic of discussion across scientific disciplines (e.g., de Vos, 2020; Stefanoudis et al., 2021), as we collectively seek to understand and improve the globalization science. Parachute conservation at critical crossroads, recognize how wealth opportunity disparity, along with enduring long shadow colonialism, hinders our progress on shared goals. We can, must, do better. occurs when scientists and/or NGOs from Global North venture South conduct research deploy programs fail invest in, fully partner with, local governance, capacity, expertise, social structures. The issue broad universal, emerging scientists, NGOs, governments alike. conservation, often well-intentioned, results in unacceptable power imbalances, hindering efforts. A simple common manifestation parachute work prioritized by outsider's motives needs, rather than in-country on-location requirements (de 2020). Confronting Science ’ s Logical Limits
To anyone infected with the idea that the human mind is unlimited in its capacity to answer questions, a tour of 20th-century mathematics must be rather disturbing. In 1931 Kurt Gödel set forth his incompleteness theorem, which established that no system of deductive inference can answer all questions about numbers. A few years later Alan M. Turing proved an equivalent assertion about computer ...

متن کاملConfronting Statistical Literacy in the Undergraduate Social Science Curriculum
The American Sociological Association (ASA) has identified scientific literacy (i.e., statistical literacy) as a key curricular goal that needs to pervade the sociology major (Howery and Rodriguez 2006). Research Methods is the core course that addresses statistical literacy, but unfortunately many students possess significant quantitative skill gaps, often accompanied by significant anxieties ...
